Denim jeans were invented in the late 1800's by Levi Straus to fulfill the need for sturdy work pants for the gold rush miners.  It was not until the 1950's, when Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and James Dean started wearing them that they became a sign of youth culture.  They worked their way up the fashion ladder again in the 1970's and 80's when high fashion adopted them.
